Science and Conservation Careers Forum 2026

The Royal Zoological Society of NSW is proud to host a Student Careers Forum at Taronga Zoo on March 14, bringing together emerging conservation professionals and leaders working across the wildlife sector.

Designed for students interested in ecology, wildlife science and conservation, this event provides a rare opportunity to hear directly from professionals working in academia, NGOs, environmental consulting and zoo-based conservation.

The day will feature short “career journey” talks from:

    • Dr Catherine Price (University of Sydney) – Academia
    • Dr Jen Anson (Australian Wildlife Conservancy) – NGO conservation
    • Ireni Clarke (EMM Consulting) – Environmental consulting
    • Dr Ben Pitcher (Taronga Conservation Society Australia) – Zoo-based conservation science
    • Liz Gerber (Sydney Zoo) – Species recovery and rewilding

Speakers will share candid insights into their career pathways – including how they secured their first roles, what their day-to-day work really involves, and how they navigated challenges along the way.

Following the talks, students will participate in a structured networking session, rotating through small-group discussions with each panellist. Conversation prompts will focus on practical career advice, including:

    • Building professional networks
    • Crafting strong CVs and applications
    • Preparing for interviews and assessments
    • Entering the workforce
    • Progressing beyond your first role

This format ensures meaningful interaction, giving students the opportunity to ask targeted questions and gain tailored advice in an accessible, supportive environment.

Whether you are just beginning your studies or preparing to graduate, this event offers practical guidance, professional connections, and valuable insight into careers that translate science into real-world conservation outcomes.

We look forward to welcoming students to Taronga Zoo for what promises to be an engaging and informative day!

No job too small: a pseudoscorpion story

      Dr Anastasia Shavrova

Pseudoscorpions are tiny, fast-moving arthropods found everywhere from leaf litter to old books, yet they remain surprisingly understudied. These harmless predators can take down prey far larger than themselves, making them intriguing candidates for biological pest control. This talk explores Sydney’s pseudoscorpions, their unusual behaviours (including hitchhiking on flying insects), and emerging research into their potential role in protecting bee colonies—without harming bees.

      Meet our speaker:

Anastasia is an evolutionary biologist and Lecturer at the University of New South Wales school of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on the evolution of reproductive strategies and sexual conflict, using arachnids as a model system. She completed her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Queen’s University, Canada, and her PhD at UNSW. Alongside her research, she is an active science communicator, producing the podcast Convos with Chordates and engaging public audiences through radio and major science and arts festivals.
