About UsHistory of RZS NSW |
The Royal Zoological Society of NSW was formed in 1879, making it the one of the oldest zoological scientific societies in Australia.
The first focus of the Society was not entirely reflective of current day zoological and ecological theory. One of the original aims of RZS NSW was to introduce and acclimatise desirable and suitable animals from abroad. Put simply, RZS NSW was established for the explicit purpose of “improving” the NSW environment through the introduction of foreign species, mainly from the northern hemisphere.
Thankfully, we have moved well beyond this rather colonial view of our native fauna. Today, the primary aim of RZS NSW is to promote and advance the science of zoology as a scientific discipline, and to protect, preserve and conserve the indigenous animals of Australasia and their associated habitats.
